Fidel Castro Tackles Key Issues for Humanity

During the second part of a meeting with intellectuals participating in the Cuba 2011 International Book Fair in Havana aired on Wednesday by Cuban television, Fidel advocated a global ecological policy in the people’s interest, not in the rich’s.

Regarding the possibility that the extreme right-wing could take power in the United States through the Tea Party, the Cuban leader said it would take two years before this could happen because they first need to solve serious problems such as the current world crisis.

In this regard, he referred to the US Government’s inability to control the use of firearms among the population, evidenced in the recent attack in which Republican congresswoman Gabrielle Gidffords almost lost her life.

Regarding the significance of the revolutionary process taking place in Venezuela, Fidel described it as today’s most important political event in the hemisphere.

He also referred to the responsibility of international organizations to find solutions to the world’s problems.

The leader noted that the superpowers do not pay attention to the United Nations —an organization he described as a fraud— and, as an example, he mentioned the annual vote against the US economic blockade of Cuba. What is the use of the United Nations if United States’ blockade is genocidal?

Fidel criticized the failure of the Summit on Climate Change held in Denmark, which was distorted by the big capitalist powers who, he said, are not interested in committing to the future of Humanity. However, he praised role played by the presidents of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, and Bolivia, Evo Morales, in the event, where they defended the interests of the Third World.
