El Departamento de Estado norteamericano acaba de publicar su informe anual 2005 sobre la libertad religiosa en el mundo. Puede parecer curioso que una cancillería se interese por estos temas; sin embargo, el interés de Estados Unidos se explica en gran medida por el hecho de que cuenta con los movimientos evangélicos en el mundo como arma para extender su dominio. Además, el poder de estos últimos en el seno del aparato estatal estadounidense ha aumentado considerablemente durante el gobierno de Bush.
Luego de clasificar a los países según el grado de libertad religiosa concedida a sus ciudadanos, el informe comparte de manera curiosa las posiciones de la política exterior estadounidense. Entre los países donde la libertad religiosa es «pisoteada» encontramos a los enemigos o rivales habituales de «América»: Cuba, Corea del Norte, China…
No obstante, más sorprendente es la parte relacionada con Israel (clasificado entre los países que cuentan con políticas o legislaciones perjudiciales para algunas religiones) donde se admite que este país se define como un Estado judío que supuestamente concede a sus ciudadanos la igualdad, pero donde en realidad musulmanes y cristianos son víctimas de discriminación social en aspectos tales como el empleo, la vivienda y la educación.
El informe también señala a Bélgica y a Alemania por las legislaciones adoptadas contra las sectas.
