The meeting between Syrian and American personalities was not planned at the international conference Axis for Peace, held on November 17 and 18, 2005 by Voltaire Network in Brussels. When the Final Declaration was already signed and the participants were leaving, the American and Syrian delegations decided to have an additional meeting, spontaneously. Worried about the threats posed by the Bush Administration, they wondered: “How can we prevent the war between our countries?” This meeting lasted until late in the evening. Participants thoroughly analyzed the approach of the problem in their respective countries from the political leaders’ viewpoints and those of the public opinion. The American and Syrian personalities reviewed together the measures that could be implemented to build bridges between the two countries. Regarding this, several concrete actions were planned.
