Cuba urged the UN Security Council to take action against terrorist activity on the Caribbean island by individuals and organizations, which have counted on Washington’s complicity.
The demand was made by Cuban ambassador Rodrigo Malmierca at the UN during discussions of the issue “Threats posed on International Peace
and Security by Terrorist Acts.”
The Cuban delegation has for years submitted the UN Security Council and
its Commission against Terrorism detailed information on terrorist
actions against the island, said Malmierca.
The ambassador said that Cuba has denounced Washington’s protection of terrorists, but no action in that respect has been observed; such is
the case of Luis Posada Carriles. However, said the Cuban diplomat, the
US government keeps five Cuban antiterrorist fighters in high security
prisons.
US ambassador Jackie Wilcott tried to justify her government´s treatment
of confessed terrorist Luis Posada Carriles by alleging that in that
case Washington acted according to International Law.
In that regard, the first secretary of the Cuban mission at the United
Nations, Fermin Quiñones replied to the US ambassador’s justification by
pointing out that had the United States acted according to International
Law, Posada Carriles would have already been processed for terrorism in
that country, or extradited to Venezuela.
