Petrocaribe Summit to Discuss New Regional Cooperation Plans

Petrocaribe is an energy cooperation agreement of the Venezuelan government with Caribbean nations that was established on June 29, 2005, which coordinates and articulates energy policies in the area in a fair and participatory way.

According to Granma news daily, participants in the meeting will not only assess advances in the field of energy cooperation but they will also analyze the design and implementation of new plans in the agriculture and food production sectors.

Delegations from Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Suriname and Venezuela will participate in the summit as full members of Petrocaribe while Costa Rica and El Salvador will attend the meeting as observers.

Other topics to be discussed during the 6th Petrocaribe Summit include infrastructure projects to optimize logistics related to the supply of hydrocarbons, the consolidation of joint ventures for the implementation of investments, infrastructure, exchange and projects of endogenous development.

Seven working groups will focus in the following themes: advances in the area of energy saving projects and the efficient use of energy; renewable sources of energy; petrochemical products; gas supply; education and training; system of exchange and compensation of the oil invoice; and fair trade.

The meeting takes place at the ministerial level on Thursday while the heads of state and government will meet on Friday.
