Leal, who is also the director of the Havana City Historian Office, offered a conference during the 4th Symposium on City Management, which inaugurated a week of cultural activities to celebrate the 496th anniversary of the founding of the city of Camagüey.

At the Agramonte Park, the center of the area declared a World Cultural Heritage Site, he called the people and the institutions to unite, without preeminence, to preserve the old without leaving out the requirements of contemporary life.

He pointed out that that objective rooted in the defense of national identity is developed under regulations of public authorities and should be maintained despite the difficult economic conditions.

Likewise, he praised the significance of the Symposium, one of the ways to give an answer to the call made by Revolution leader Fidel Castro that the first thing that needs to be saved is culture.

The speaker also focused on different facets of the legacy of Major General Ignacio Agramonte, during a speech in front of the monument that pays tribute to this hero,located at the former Plaza de Armas -one of the oldest squares built by the Spaniards in The Americas. Also participating in the ceremony were Julio Cesar Garcia, first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party in the province, and Jesus Garcia, president of the People’s Power in the territory.

The inaugural ceremony of celebrations for the 496th anniversary took place on Monday night.

One of the oldest population settlements established by the Spaniards in The Americas, the Villa de Santa Maria del Puerto del Principe, currently Camagüey, was founded on February 2, 1514.
