The ceremony took place at the Main Hall of the University of Havana and it was attended by the Vietnamese ambassador to Cuba, Vu Chi Cong, who highlighted the long-standing bonds of friendship between the Caribbean nation and his country.

During a brief speech, Vu Chi Cong thanked Cuba for the training of Vietnamese students in the island. He also recalled the history of Viet Nam’s Communist Party, founded by anti-imperialist leader Ho Chi Minh in 1930, and praised the role of the Cuban Communist Party in the revolutionary process.

The diplomat once again demanded the lifting of Washington’s almost 50-year-old economic blockade of Cuba and the release of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters who remain unjustly imprisoned in the United States since 1998.

For his part, Jorge Marti, head of the Foreign Relations Department at the Central Committee of Cuba’s Communist Party, said that the implementation of the principles of the Marxist-Leninist doctrine in Viet Nam’s concrete conditions have translated into the sustained development that this nation experiences today in the Asian region.

Also present in the ceremony were Yolanda Ferrer, General Secretary of the Cuban Women’s Federation; Kenia Serrano, President of the Cuban Friendship Institute; and representatives of the Asian diplomatic corps accredited to Havana.
