The New York Police Department (NYPD) has decided to stop its secret surveillance program targeting the Muslim community, new Police Commissioner William J. Bratton reported.

The program was devised after the coup of September 11, 2001 by former CIA officer Lawrence Sanchez. The New York police was tasked with closely monitoring every action and move of Muslims in the city. A special unit (The Demographics Unit, later known as the Zone Assessment Unit) infiltrated Muslim organizations and mosques. It mapped Muslim people and their habits. Despite such measures spanning thirteen years, the program turned out to have zero leads.
