  Klaus Barbie is convicted
After two months of hearings, Klaus Barbie was sentenced to a life term for committing crimes against humanity by the Court of Rodano. Accused of torture, executions and deportations, the former Gestapo boss, executor of Jean Moulin, had had the support of the United States for several decades to escape French authorities. In return, he had been one of America’s main informers in Latin America. Being a former CIA agent, in charge - among other things - of the repression in Bolivia, he was extradited only in 1983. Until then, the US authorities had managed to maintain his whereabouts in secret. Five long years of a process went by, in which only his crimes during World War II were taken into account, ignoring his involvement in the Condor Operation.
