This reality is proof of the injustice committed
against Gonzalez Llort and his four comrades, all anti
terrorist fighters. Fernando was given 19 years in
prison. Together with Rene Gonzalez, Gerardo
Hernandez, Ramon Labanino and Antonio Guerrero, his
brothers in the struggle, who were given higher
penalties totalling four life sentences plus 77 years
in prison.

These five men were detained on September 12th, 1998
and submitted to a politicized trial in Miami without
legal guarantees, for having infiltrated right wing
Cuban American groups which had organized and executed sabotage from
southern Florida with the
backing of Washington.

The objective of the Cuban Five was to alert the Cuban authorities of
criminal actions against the island, inside the US and in other
nations. In his
words during the trial, Fernando was demonstrating that the
irrational hate towards the Revolution had been the result of the
White House’s anti Cuban policy, whose actions were aimed at
condemning the five while protecting the real terrorists.

More than a self defense, Fernando’s speech strongly
denounced the history of attacks against Cuba by
successive US administrations starting from the
triumph of the Revolution on January 1st, 1959. “…A
story in which economic war, biological aggression,
together with terrorism, sabotage, paramilitary
actions and attempts to assassinate political
leaders of the Revolution originated mainly in
southern Florida”, said Fernando.

He recalled that the terrorists groups in Miami were
created, trained and financed by the CIA, a fact
proven in declassified documents by the US government
in 1997 and 1998.

And he declared that: “Maybe the complicity and
loyalty to the political sector of that society is
what guarantees the impunity of their actions against
Cuba, offering them security for their activities
which are ignored by the authorities and are protected
by political pressures in favour of the terrorists in
case they are detained. The facts have shown this is
the case.”

Later events have proven Fernando’s words, as in the
case of terrorist Luis Posada Carriles who has been
protected by the Bush administration which refuses to
extradite him to Venezuela to be tried for the
bombing of a Cubana airliner on October 6th, 1976
killing 73 people on board.

Orlando Bosch, co-author of that crime lives in Miami,
thanks to a pardon by ex President George Bush senior.
“There cannot be double moral standards. Terrorism
must be fought and eliminated whether committed
against a powerful nation or small country. There is
no good or bad terrorism,” said Fernando.
