According to Prensa Latina news agency, LASA is the world’s biggest organization grouping experts on topics relating to Latin America and the Caribbean.

The event, which will run until September 8th, is being attended by nearly 8,000 academics from several countries and its main theme is: "After the Consensus of Washington: Research Cooperating for a New American Continent."

The Cuban delegation to the event is made up of 135 academics and intellectuals who will present works connected to the efforts of Cuban cultural and scientific institutions.

The Congress was originally scheduled to take place in the US city of Boston but organizers had to change the venue so that Cuban specialists
- who were denied visas by the US government on the last two events - could attend the Congress.

The executive board of LASA invited Alarcon to give a conference to the plenary session of the event.
