During the debate at the UN body on the Cuban resolution “Need to cease the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” the Cuban foreign minister said that what makes the US unilateral measure worse is its extraterritorial character. Such scope of the US anti-Cuba legislation reveals Washington’s contempt of the legitimate interests of Third World countries, which are interested in developing normal trade relations with Cuba, he said.

Perez Roque explained that at least 30 nations were the targets of the US anti-Cuba policy from May 2006 through May 2007 and he gave examples, such as the Netherlands Caribbean Bank, whose accounts were frozen by Washington and prohibited from making any transactions with US entities, just because the bank operated in Cuba.

The Cuban government official also recalled the fines imposed on the British company PSL Energy Service for its equipment exports to Cuba. Same thing happened to Finland´s Datex-Ohmeda firm after selling the island anaesthetic equipment and other medical devices. He said the Cuba was not able to purchase an infrared spectrophotometer from Japan´s Shimadzu Company, just because the equipment components are more than 10 percent of US origin.

Felipe also recalled that the most notorious event about the US blockade of Cuba is the merciless war unleashed by the US Department of the Treasury against all kinds of relations between Cuba and banking institutions from third countries.

Over the past12 months, more than 20 banks of different countries have been threatened to induce interruption of any relation or transaction with Cuba, said the Cuban Foreign Minister as he denounced the damage inflicted by the over 45-year US economic, financial and commercial blockade of Cuba.

The United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly condemned the US unilateral measure by voting the island’s resolution demanding its lifting with 184 votes in favour, one abstention and only 4
votes against.

This is the sixteenth consecutive year in which the UN condemns the US
measure imposed on the island for over four decades. Last year,
183 countries backed the Cuban resolution, which stood for 95 percent
of the total of UN member nations.
