Parliament president Ricardo Alarcon announced that 509 deputies are present at the plenary session, which stands for over 86 percent attendance. During the ordinary session, the Cuban parliamentarians will assess the country’s social and economic performance in 2007, as well as the implementation of the budge, which was largely used to guarantee social programs, particularly projects related to health care and education.

The National Assembly of People’s Power (Parliament) will discuss social and economic guidelines for 2008, as well as the budgetary policy.

Aspects, such as food production and conservation and the development of human resources in the health care sector were considered strategic due to their social impact and their influence on the quality of life of the Cuban people by the parliament permanent commissions on Wednesday and Thursday.

In the commissions, the Cuban parliamentarians were briefed on the performance different social and economic sectors, such as the judicial system, education, culture, sports and others.
