Granma newspaper reports that the program will stretch over two weeks and its main goal is to prevent complications caused by the seasonal flu virus.

Maria Josefa Llanes Cordero, head of coordination of the Group of Acute Respiratory Infections at the National Direction of Epidemiology in the Cuban Public Health Ministry, said that the vaccine will be administered through an intramuscular injection.

Doses will be given to people over 75 years of age, to a group of youths ranging from 20 to 24 years of age who suffer from severe asthma and diabetes, and to patients with chronic kidney failure under dialysis and hemodialysis treatment.

Others who will receive the vaccine include the disabled and those living in residential homes for the elderly as well as people working directly with pigs and in poultry farms.

The Granma note explains that this vaccine does not create immunity against the A H1N1 Influenza virus.
