President Obama plans to nominate Victoria Nuland as assistant secretary of state for Europe and retired Gen. Douglas E. Lute as ambassador to NATO.

Victoria Nuland was George W. Bush’s ambassador to NATO and spokesperson for Hillary Clinton. She is married to historian and Washington Post columnist Robert Kagan, who—like herself—switched from the Republican party to the Democratic party.
Nuland is accused by Republican senators of having helped Hillary Clinton to hide the truth about the attacks that killed the U.S. ambassador to Benghazi.

General Douglas E. Lute served as Deputy National Security Advisor for Iraq and Afghanistan under Presidents Bush and Obama. A consensual military personality, he has been tasked with bringing NATO down to size.
