Damascus launches anti-corruption operation

President el-Assad had made a commitment to combat corruption in Syria. However, it proved impossible to remove high-ranking officials during a troubled period without taking the risk of seeing them join the armed opposition.

However, a sign that times are changing, the President of the Council of Ministers, Wael al-Halqi, dismissed 352 senior officials on November 6th 2013, and 28 others on November 7th.
