Valerie Amos, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, has organized a series of meetings in Geneva dealing with aid for the Syrian population.

Baroness Amos of Brondesbury had initially planned to invite a small group of concerned countries: in addition to the five members of the Security Council, Saudi Arabia, Australia (where Mme. Amos had formerly represented the Queen), Iran, Koweit, Luxembourg and Qatar were on the list.

As it turns out, after Iran and Saudi Arabia participated alongside the United States, on Thursday November 21st 2013, in a working session at the French mission, each permanent member of the Security Council has introduced new participants.

These meetings focus exclusively on humanitarian aid, but they clearly look ahead to the Geneva 2 conference.
