British NGO ActionAid International revealed, prior to the G-8 summit, the real amount of the assistance distributed by states to countries who suffer serious humanitarian crises. According to official figures and experts’ evaluations, 60% of the aid promised by governments around the world never materializes and, in the case of France and the United States the number increases to 90%. “The most illustrative example is that of the assistance destined to the victims of the recent tsunami,” said John Samuel, director of ActionAid International for Asia, highlighting, in particular, the unfulfilled promises of Australia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada and the United States. The director also asked that the G-8 members, main donors, be more transparent noting that “over the last two years, most of the assistance turn into donations of weapons and ammunition.”
