According to a June 23 poll conducted by Washington DC based polling company Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research Inc., 49% of Venezuela’s registered voters would support President Hugo Chavez in the upcoming recall referendum vs. 44% who would vote to recall him.

The State of Democracy in Venezuela was the subject of a hearing at the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations held Thursday in Washington, DC. Venezuela has attracted interest from U.S. politicians as numerous allegations have been made against President Hugo Chavez and as a recall referendum on his mandate approaches.

Supporters of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez took the streets of Caracas on Sunday, as the country begins to prepare for a recall referendum on the mandate of the controversial South American leader. The Chavistas marched from tree sections of the country’s capital to converge at the downtown Bolivar Avenue where the President gave a speech vowing to defeat the opposition in the upcoming recall referendum.
