According to the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV), the private industry not related to the oil business grew 20.7% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP: goods and services generated by the economy of a country) in the third quarter. The new president of the Venezuelan Chamber of the Food Industry, Pablo Baraybar expressed the willingness of his sector to work with the government in order to reduce malnutrition. The businessmen are interested in participating in the sale of products through the Mercal store network, which offers products with discounts of up to 50%, in order to benefit the popular sectors.

The demand for basic commodities increased 14.6% between January and August of 2004, according to a report by the Supermarket and Self-services Association. The products with the greatest volume variation were sardines (32 %), corn flour (29 %), and wheat flour(20%).

With the extension of the program of exemptions from the Tax on Aggregated Value for the purchase of family vehicle, the Venezuelan assembling plants are expecting a high demand for automobiles. In one year, car sales rose 145.13%. Between January and September of 2004, the sector reached the figure of 87,000 units sold.

More than a thousand persons finishing the “Vuelvan Caras” training and employment program, will be guided by this new ministry to form self sustainable production units. Minister Elías Jaua said that the purpose is to strengthen a kind of alternative, non traditional form of production.

The new ministry will facilitate food consumption through popular programs. It will also expand the state’s agro-alimentary companies and industries, in order to break private monopolies in processing, distribution, and commercialization of first necessities.

The currency exchange control policy has encouraged non traditional exports. Industries have decided to expand their markets towards Colombia, the United States, Argentina Brazil, and Europe.
Francisco Mendoza, president of the Venezuelan Exporters Association (AVEX), informed that sales from the national companies to the international markets, have increased 30%, and expectations are to have billed 2.8billion U$ by the end of the year.

The housing shortage is one of the most serious problems in Venezuela, together with unemployment, lack of personal security, and poverty. A report by the Venezuelan Construction Chamber, reveals that 5 out of each 10 persons lack adequate homes. The Venezuelan Central Bank (BCV) sales volume index from January to April, reveals a 28.35% recovery in wholesale and retail trade, as well as a 36% rise in food consumption.
