Authorities in Spain have launched proceedings to suspend the notorious investigating magistrate Baltasar Garzón. The ostensible reason for the move is his investigation into the fate of 114,000 people who disappeared during the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath. The public prosecutor’s office says Garzón had no authority to conduct the investigation because of a 1977 amnesty law. But Garzón says the disappearances must be considered crimes against humanity, and therefore not covered by any (...)

The digitally altered image of an older and greying Bin Laden (left in the photo) was meant to show how the world’s most wanted terrorist might now look without his trademark turban and long beard.
But it created an unexpected stir in Madrid when Gaspar Llamazares, the former leader of Spain’s United Left communist party and the caucus’s current spokesperson in the parliament, recognised strong elements of himself in the image and complained to the US.

A series of bombings plunged Madrid into mourning five years ago. The Spanish legal system concluded that this operation, attributed first to ETA and then to Al Qaeda, was Islamist inspired, though not linked with international networks. The leading war correspondent of Al-Jazeera, Tayseer Aluni, was arrested on 8 September 2003 in Spain. The judge Baltazar Garzón accuses him of being "an eminent member of Al Qaida", according to information supplied by Israeli and US intelligence services. The reports by Tayseer Aluni on the losses and damages suffered by the civil population in Afghanistan, then in Iraq, brought the wrath of the Pentagon on hi head. A delegation from the Voltaire Network for the Freedom of expression went to the editorial group of Al-Jazeera to show its support for Aluni.
