As I did four years ago, I once again extend the greetings of the people and the Government of the Republic of Uruguay to this Assembly, which is the most broadly representative body of today’s world.

Roadblocks on the international bridges connecting Argentina and Uruguay, carried out by the Argentine environmental movement to protest the construction of two large cellulose factories, demonstrates the social limitations of the neoliberal model and is jeopardizing the regional alliance between two governments that possess, fundamentally, the same political and ideological orientations.

Venezuelan President Chávez and Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez signed a series of agreements and conventions in the Venezuelan capital today, as part of a three-day visit by the Uruguayan President. During their common press conference, both Presidents stressed the need to transform and strengthen Mercosur, the Common Market of the South (encompassing Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Venezuela).

During the Axis for Peace International Conference , the director of the Uruguayan weekly Brecha, Yvonne Trías, expressed her indignation for anti-Semitism accusations against intellectuals who oppose Israel’s policy towards the Palestinian.“They added my name on a black list of people described as ‘ant-Semites’ by a Jewish intellectual”, regretted the director of the Uruguayan Left’s Major Weekly newspaper, during the meeting organized by Voltaire Network on November 17 and 18, 2005 in Brussels. Venezuela and Uruguay signed a series of strategic bilateral agreements in energy and telecommunications today, following the inauguration of Uruguay’s new president Tabaré Vasquez, which Venezuela’s President Chavez attended.
The energy agreements that were signed would have Venezuela provide Uruguay with oil at discounted prices. The two countries also signed the “Declaration of Montevideo,” which seeks Uruguayan participation in Venezuela’s regional oil initiative known as “Petrosur.” At (...)
