A UNICEF report recently issued addressed the situation of children worldwide. It was not surprising that the figures published revealed a catastrophic situation. Mostly because half of the births that take place in developing nations are not registered, thus turning these children into invisible ones for the States and their policies. Among the figures shown we could mention the 171 million children that work in the world sometimes under similar conditions to those of slavery. Endemic poverty, wars and AIDS are also the factors that account for these shameful facts.
In a report that was published in the last few days and entitled: The situation of children in the world 2006: excluded and invisibles, UNICEF showed the catastrophic situation in which millions of children are living in worldwide, especially in developing nations.
The UN agency got to speak of invisible children, especially because 50% of births are not registered. These children cannot enjoy any legal existence and are therefore ignored by the States and their policies.
Other children have become invisible since they are deprived of their parent’s protection. 143 million children in developing countries are orphans, dozens of millions live on the streets and a million of them are in jails.
Exploitation of children is an extremely serious phenomenon and is affecting 171 million children who work, 73 million of them are under 10. Slavery and prostitution are the exacerbated modalities of this exploitation.
Obviously, poverty and inequalities, the inability of some States to provide basic services to their populations, as well as the armed conflicts, not to mention AIDS impact, which is significant, are among the main causes of such exclusion.
Like the rest of UN agencies, UNICEF has shown how serious it is in its studies and diagnosis. However, it is a pity that such work is not translated into concrete actions by the States that enjoy setting objectives which are seldom achieved.
