• The announcement by the Arab League of tougher sanctions and the referral to the Security Council has been overshadowed by numerous articles concerning the catastrophic consequences on the economies of the states applying the sanctions.

• The agreement reached between the Arab League and the Syrian government for the deployment of observers has been received in the Middle East with a sight of relief. Indeed, Damascus had posed as sole prerequisite that the Arab League resume an empathetic attitude. Even if things are not spelled out, everyone should see that bringing in observers will be coupled with the lifting of major sanctions and forebodes a re-start of the economy.
