The first French nuclear bomb, which exploded 24 August 1968 at 600 m above Fangataufa, an atoll in the Pacific, was 130 times more powerful than Little Boy, the fission bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. In comparison, the current H-bombs are at least 1000 times more powerful than an A bomb.
It is not a matter of being optimistic or pessimistic, knowing or not knowing elementary things, of being responsible or not for events. Those who would like to be thought of as politicians should (...)

Cuban leader Fidel Castro shares his views on the tragic events unfolding in Libya. It appears that, once again, the mainstrem media is manipulating the information and clouding the facts on the ground. It may take some time before we can wade through the distortions and begin to decipher the forces at play and the interests at stake.

In a Reflection published on August 25, 2010 under the title of “The Opinion of an Expert”, I mentioned a really unusual activity of the United States and its allies which, in my opinion, underlines the risk of a nuclear conflict with Iran. I was referring to a long article by the well-known journalist Jeffrey Goldberg, published in the US journal The Atlantic in September of that year, entitled “The Point of No Return”.

According to Fidel Castro, the Obama Administration’s escalation in the Middle East and the Persial Gulf is leading to nuclear war. The accusations leveled against North Korea regarding the "Cheonean" incident are doubtful, as are the claims that Iran is developing a military nuclear programme. Tainted by the BP oil spill scandal, President Obama might easily feel tempted to take an irreversible step. To preserve peace, shouldn’t he accept President Ahmadinejad’s invitation to hold head-to-head talks?

On Tuesday, June 8, I wrote at noon time the Reflection “On the Brink of Tragedy.” Later, I watched Randy Alonso’s TV program Roundtable, usually aired at 6:30 pm.
That day, outstanding and prestigious Cuban intellectuals taking part in the program answered the pointed questions raised by (...)

I had no choice but to write two reflections on Iran and Korea explaining the imminent danger of a war with the use of nuclear weapons. I have also expressed my opinion that in one of these cases the danger could be thwarted if China decided to veto the resolution promoted by the United States at the UN Security Council. The other depends of factors that escape any possibility of control, given the fanatic behavior of the State of Israel, which the United States has turned into a strong (...)

I had the privilege of having a conversation for three hours last Thursday the 15th with Hugo Chávez, the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela: he had the courtesy to visit our country once again, this time en route from Nicaragua.
On just a few occasions, perhaps never, have I known a person who has been capable of leading a real and profound Revolution for more than 10 years; with not a single day of rest, in a territory under a million square kilometres, in this region of (...)

Fidel Castro applauds health care reform in the United States. However, he fails to understand how come something that was achieved by the Cuban revolution already half a century ago, and which the United States has arrived at only two centuries after its independence, should be hailed as a sign of the capitalist system’s vitality.

In my Reflection of January 14, two days after the catastrophe in Haiti, which destroyed that neighboring sister nation, I wrote: “In the area of healthcare and others the Haitian people has received the cooperation of Cuba, even though this is a small and blockaded country. Approximately 400 doctors and healthcare workers are helping the Haitian people free of charge. Our doctors are working every day at 227 of the 237 communes of that country. On the other hand, no less than 400 young Haitians have been graduated as medical doctors in our country. They will now work alongside the reinforcement that traveled there yesterday to save lives in that critical situation. Thus, up to one thousand doctors and healthcare personnel can be mobilized without any special effort; and most are already there willing to cooperate with any other State that wishes to save Haitian lives and rehabilitate the (...)

Preparations by the United States are underway for a war against the ALBA countries. Following the coup in Honduras and the installation of military bases in Colombia, they have launched a press campaign to justify their sinister plans. The U.S. and Colombian media are inverting the roles by portraying Venezuela as the aggressor, Colombia as the prey and the U.S. as the saviour. A classic scenario denounced here by Fidel Castro.
