The United States Congress split in half the budget allocated to the Defense Clandestine Service, an espionage program created two years ago by the Department of Defense within the Defense Intelligence Agency.

According to the lawmakers, it behooves the Defense Secretary to prove the usefulness of this expenditure before underwriting his funding requests. Chuck Hagel’s spokesperson simply indicated that this program was recycling a concept that had proven fully satisfactory in the late 80’s, but which was interrupted by President Clinton.

Officially created to expand its military espionage activities outside of a conflict zone, chiefly towards Iran and China, the Defense Clandestine Service is accused of overlapping its functions with the CIA.

In reality, the Defense Clandestine Service was basically served to relocate Military Intelligence Officers who had been massively deployed during the Iraq war.
