President Donald Trump instructed the Pentagon to establish a sixth Army (after the US Land Forces, the US Air Force, the US Navy, the US Marine Corps and the US Coast Guards): the US Space Force.
Although we don’t have a clear idea of what will be the function of this new army, the rationale for establishing it is very clear: to establish a rival – a counterforce - to Russia, China and to reopen the path for the US to conquer the Moon and Mars.
International treaties that are in force create obligations prohibiting operational arms from being permanently positioned in space. However Russia and China have already established a Space Force tasked notably with destroying enemy satellites. Furthermore, Russia has come up with a hypersonic missile that can exit into space as part of its trajectory then re-enter into the atmosphere.
President Trump’s decision will have to be ratified by Congress.
