Former fellow traveler of Paul Kagame before the genocide and power takeover, General Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa was High Commander of the Rwandese Army, then Director of Intelligence Services, before falling out with the President and taking the road to exile.

He had rebuked the corruption accusation leveled against him, accusing in return his former friend Paul Kagame of eliminating all those who do not submit to him.

He found refuge in South Africa, where a hit man shot him at close range on 19 June 2010. The General has been hospitalised in critical condition. The Kigali Government has denied having had any involvement in the assassination attempt.
