Cuba concluded 2009 with an infant mortality rate of 4,8 deaths per every one thousand live births – similar to the all-time lowest of 4,7 attained in 2008 – in spite of the current Influenza A H1N1 pandemic.
According to Granma newspaper, there were a total of 130,027 births in 2009, which represented an increase in the nation’s birth rate of 7,458 children compared to the previous year.
The article highlights that this is the result of the efforts of all workers of the health sector and the political will of the State, which paid special attention to pregnant women and children under one year.
Granma reports that Public Health Minister Jose Ramon Balaguer congratulated all
professionals, technicians and support workers linked to the National Program of Health Attention to Mothers and Children.
The congratulation also includes workers from other sectors that contributed to this result.
