Lakhdar Brahimi, the Special Representative of Ban Ki-moon and Nabil al-Araby for Syria, tendered his resignation. It will become effective on May 31. He will, of course, continue to receive his double salary until that date.

The agreement reached in Homs last week - which provided for the departure to Turkey of the French, Saudi and U.S. officers and the transfer of foreign mercenaries to the North - put a damper on Western ambitions to overthrow the Syrian government and to destroy the country.

Tunisia has indicated its opposition to the appointment of its former Foreign Minister Kamel Morjane to succeed Mr. Brahimi.
